Italian Vallisneria care guide (Vallisneria spiralis)

Italian Vallisneria (Vallisneria spiralis) is a popular, easy-to-care-for aquatic plant that's great for beginners and experienced aquarists alike. Here's a guide to keeping it healthy and thriving in your aquarium:

Water parameters

Temperature: Tolerant to a wide range, optimally 68–82°F (20–28°C), but can handle 59–86°F (15–30°C).

pH: Prefers slightly alkaline to neutral conditions, with a range of 6.5–8.0 being ideal.

Hardness: Thrives in moderate to hard water, 4–18 GH.

Water Flow: Prefers slow-moving water but adapts to various conditions.

Lighting

Moderate to high lighting is ideal for optimal growth and vibrant leaves.

It can tolerate low lighting, but will grow slower and may reach taller to compensate for the light deficiency.

Substrate

Nutrient-rich substrate is preferred for best growth, but Vallisneria can grow well in various substrates, including plain gravel or sand.

Ensure the substrate is at least 3-4 inches deep for the root system.

Planting

Plant the roots gently, keeping the crown exposed to prevent rotting.

It's best placed in the background or corners due to its potential height.

Fertilization and CO2

Fertilizers: While Vallisneria can survive on fish and snail waste, supplementing with liquid plant fertilizers containing micronutrients like potassium and iron promotes healthier growth.

CO2: Not strictly required, but CO2 injection can speed up growth and enhance leaf vibrancy.

Propagation and trimming

Vallisneria reproduces via runners that spread beneath the substrate.

To propagate, carefully detach well-established plantlets from the runners and replant them elsewhere in the aquarium.

Regular trimming is essential to control its height, especially in smaller tanks, and to remove any dead or decaying leaves
