Water conditions

Hornwort thrives in temperatures between 59°F and 86°F (15°C and 30°C), preferring a pH of 6.0 to 7.5 and moderate hardness (2 to 15 dGH). This plant helps maintain water quality by absorbing excess nutrients like nitrates and phosphates, which can prevent algae growth. It's important to avoid high copper levels. 

Lighting

Hornwort adapts well to various light levels. Low light results in slower growth and a darker color, while moderate to high light promotes faster growth and a vibrant green appearance. Aim for 8-10 hours of light daily, ideally using full-spectrum LED or fluorescent lighting. 

Planting and substrate

Naturally a floating plant, Hornwort can also be anchored in substrate using weights or careful planting. Since it lacks true roots, it primarily absorbs nutrients from the water column, but liquid or substrate fertilizers can supplement growth. 

Fertilization and CO2

While not essential, liquid fertilizer can improve Hornwort's health, particularly in tanks without nutrient-rich substrates. CO2 supplementation also boosts growth, though the plant grows quickly without it. 

Trimming and maintenance

Due to its rapid growth of 1-4 inches per week, regular trimming is necessary to prevent Hornwort from dominating the tank. Trimming also encourages bushier growth. Remove any dead leaves to maintain water quality.

Propagation is simple: cut a healthy stem section and let it float or anchor it. 

Common problems and solutions

Needle shedding can occur due to sudden environmental changes. Stable water conditions and proper nutrients can help. Browning or yellowing suggests nutrient or light deficiency; adding fertilizer and ensuring adequate light can resolve this. While Hornwort helps with algae control, excessive light or nutrients can lead to algae growth on the plant. "Melting" (browning and disintegration) is often caused by changes in water chemistry or temperature; water changes and temperature adjustments can help. 

Hornwort is generally pest-resistant, but inspecting and rinsing new plants is advised.
