Salvinia care guide

Salvinia, a popular floating aquatic fern, is relatively easy to care for and can be a beautiful addition to a freshwater aquarium or pond. 

Here's a comprehensive care guide:

1. Water parameters

Temperature: 65° - 89° F (16° - 32° C). Ideal temperatures are between 71 – 80 °F (22 – 26 °C).

pH: 6.5 - 8.0, with an optimal range between 6.0 and 8.0.

Hardness: 3 – 18 GH.

Water flow: Salvinia thrives in still or low-flow water and can be negatively impacted by high surface agitation. If using a filter, choose one with low flow or consider using a surface skimmer to minimize disturbance. 

2. Lighting

Requirements: Salvinia needs moderate to high light to grow rapidly and produce new shoots. Low light conditions will result in decreased growth.

Source: Bright LED lights are recommended and should be kept on for at least 10 hours daily. For optimal spread and to prevent leaf burn, position the lights 4 to 7 inches above the water surface.

Direct vs. Indirect Light: While Salvinia can thrive in full sun outdoors, in an aquarium setting, balancing its need for bright light with the needs of other inhabitants is crucial. Consider using direct sunlight in the morning and then providing shade or indirect light in the afternoon to prevent excessive heat and direct light exposure. 

3. Substrate & fertilization

Substrate: As a floating plant, Salvinia doesn't require a traditional substrate.

Fertilization: While not strictly mandatory, supplementing with liquid fertilizer containing Nitrogen, Phosphorus, and Potassium (NPK) can enhance growth and overall plant health.  A balanced aquatic plant fertilizer with a 10-10-10 NPK ratio is a good option. Fertilize sparingly to avoid over-fertilization, which can lead to uncontrolled growth. 

4. Maintenance and pruning

Growth Rate: Salvinia can grow incredibly fast, potentially doubling its biomass in 4-10 days under ideal conditions.

Pruning: Regular pruning is necessary to prevent overcrowding and shading of other plants. Simply remove excess plants as needed.

Propagation: Salvinia propagates easily through vegetative means. Divide the plant and place sections in new water with similar conditions to facilitate growth. 

5. Potential issues and solutions

Overgrowth: Trim excess plants regularly to maintain a healthy balance in the aquarium or pond.

Oxygen Depletion: If Salvinia forms a thick mat, it can impede gas exchange at the water surface and reduce oxygen levels, potentially harming fish or shrimp. Ensure adequate surface agitation or aeration to prevent this.

Leaf Rot: Condensation dripping onto floating leaves can cause rot. Minimize direct contact with water droplets to prevent this.

Discoloration: Pale or discolored leaves can indicate a nutrient deficiency. Regular fertilization should resolve this issue.

Pests and Diseases: While relatively hardy, Salvinia can be susceptible to pests like aphids or fungal infections. Regularly inspect the plant for signs of trouble and address any issues promptly. 

6. Compatibility

Salvinia can be a beneficial plant in controlling algae growth by providing shade and reducing nutrient levels in the water.

It can be a great companion plant for species like bladderworts and Aldrovanda.

However, its rapid growth can outcompete other plants, especially those that need more light, so monitor its growth closely.
