Name: Hoya ‘Ruthie’
Scientific Name: Hoya cv. Ruthie
Family: Apocynaceae
Product Description:
Hoya ‘Ruthie’ is a vining tropical cultivar prized for its glossy, elongated leaves and spectacular floral clusters. The foliage is deep green, often with a wave-like texture, and each leaf measures approximately 3–5 inches long and 1.5 inches wide. Under bright light, the leaves may develop subtle red or purple tones.
Its blooms are the true showstopper: large, star-shaped flowers with a gradient of yellow to pink hues, forming in clusters up to 2 inches across. Each flower is about 0.6 inches in diameter and emits a sweet, spicy fragrance, especially noticeable in the evening. The plant blooms readily under proper care and is known for its photogenic floral displays.
Origination: Likely developed in Southeast Asia; exact hybrid lineage is unconfirmed
Historic Uses: Ornamental vine for hanging baskets, trellises, and tropical plant collections
Height: Trailing stems can reach 6–10 feet with support
Hardiness: USDA Zones 11a–11b
Flower Color: Yellow to pink gradient with a deeper pink corona
Other Names: Sometimes referred to as Hoya cv. Ruthie or Hoya sp. Ruthie
Growing Instructions:
Hoya ‘Ruthie’ thrives in bright, indirect light, with some gentle morning sun to encourage blooming. Avoid harsh midday rays, which can scorch leaves. Use a well-draining mix—orchid bark, extra coarse perlite, and coco coir work well. Water when the top 2–3 inches of soil are dry and reduce frequency in cooler months.
Maintain temperatures between 65–85°F and aim for humidity levels above 50%. Mist regularly or use a pebble tray to boost humidity if necessary. Fertilize lightly during the growing season with a balanced or high-potassium formula. This cultivar is relatively fast-growing and forgiving, making it suitable for both beginners and seasoned Hoya collectors.
Ships in 3.5" pots. You will receive a plant similar to the ones pictured, though size and fullness may vary. A few broken leaves or small stems are normal during shipping and are not considered damage. Broken stems can be rooted once the cut end dries to start new growth. Plants may arrive semi‑dormant, and in winter they may naturally drop a few leaves. If your plant arrives rotting or dead, we will replace it. Please contact us with photo proof within 24 hours of delivery. After 24 hours, plant care becomes the buyer’s responsibility, though we’re always happy to answer questions and help you succeed. We also add brief instructions on getting started when you open your box. We want our plant babies to have happy new homes! 🥰
Heat packs are available to purchase in our shop for cold-sensitive plants. Keep in mind some plants we carry are very tropical and even cold, not freezing, temperatures can kill them. 📌IF YOU EXPECT COLD WEATHER, PLEASE PURCHASE A HEAT PACK! 📌 These are necessary for winter shipping, so I sell them at cost. I won't refund or replace any frozen plants unless you buy one!
