Name: Hoya pentaphlebia
Scientific Name: Hoya pentaphlebia (Kloppenburg)
Family: Apocynaceae
Product Description:
Hoya pentaphlebia is a vining tropical epiphyte native to the Philippines, especially regions like Samar Island, Biliran, and Mindanao. It’s named for the five prominent veins visible on its leaves—most noticeable in younger foliage. The leaves are glossy green, often heart-shaped or lanceolate, and can reach up to 6 inches long and 4.5 inches wide. Under strong light, they may develop a bronze or reddish hue due to sun stress, adding visual depth.
The plant produces umbrella-shaped clusters of star-shaped yellow flowers, each about 0.6 inches in diameter, with a white or yellow-centered corona. These blooms are fragrant—often described as citrusy or lavender-like—and typically last around 3 days. The entire umbel can span 1.5 inches across, with up to 20 flowers per cluster.
Origination: Low-altitude forests of the Philippines
Historic Uses: Ornamental vine for tropical collections, hanging baskets, and trellised displays
Height: Trailing vines can reach several feet in length
Hardiness: USDA Zones 11a–11b
Flower Color: Yellow with white or yellow corona
Other Names: None formally, though sometimes confused with similar species
Growing Instructions:
Hoya pentaphlebia thrives in bright, filtered light, mimicking its native forest canopy. Avoid harsh afternoon sun, which can scorch leaves. Use a chunky, well-draining mix—orchid bark, perlite, and coco coir work well. Water thoroughly when the top inch or two of soil is dry, and always empty excess water from trays to prevent root rot. Maintain temperatures between 60–80°F, and aim for humidity levels above 40–60%. Grouping plants, using pebble trays, or a humidifier can help. Fertilize lightly during the growing season with a balanced or high-potassium formula. This species is sensitive to cold and wet conditions, so winter care is key—keep it warm and dry.
Ships in 3.5" pots. You will receive a plant similar to the ones pictured, though size and fullness may vary. A few broken leaves or small stems are normal during shipping and are not considered damage. Broken stems can be rooted once the cut end dries to start new growth. Plants may arrive semi‑dormant, and in winter they may naturally drop a few leaves. If your plant arrives rotting or dead, we will replace it. Please contact us with photo proof within 24 hours of delivery. After 24 hours, plant care becomes the buyer’s responsibility, though we’re always happy to answer questions and help you succeed. We also add brief instructions on getting started when you open your box. We want our plant babies to have happy new homes! 🥰
Heat packs are available to purchase in our shop for cold-sensitive plants. Keep in mind some plants we carry are very tropical and even cold, not freezing, temperatures can kill them. 📌IF YOU EXPECT COLD WEATHER, PLEASE PURCHASE A HEAT PACK! 📌 These are necessary for winter shipping, so I sell them at cost. I won't refund or replace any frozen plants unless you buy one!
