Name: Dischidia platyphylla
Scientific Name: Dischidia platyphylla
Family: Apocynaceae
Product Description:
Dischidia platyphylla is a compact, epiphytic vine native to the Philippines, known for its flat, rounded leaves that grow tightly against vertical surfaces in a shingling pattern. The leaves are succulent and smooth, ranging from bright green to gray-green, and often overlap like roof tiles. Beneath each leaf, adventitious roots help anchor the plant to bark or wood. This species has a mutualistic relationship with arboreal ants, which nest inside the hollow leaf bases and provide nutrients through detritus. Flowers are small, white to cream, and appear sporadically under ideal conditions. Its compact form and unusual growth habit make it ideal for mounted displays and terrarium walls.
Origination: Philippines
Historic Uses: Ornamental epiphyte for mounted displays, terrariums, and ant-plant collections
Height: Vines trail or climb up to 3 feet (90 cm)
Hardiness: USDA Zones 11a–12b
Flower Color: White to cream, star-shaped
Other Names: Sometimes called “Shingle Plant” or “Helmet Leaf Dischidia”
Growing Instructions:
Dischidia platyphylla thrives in bright, indirect light and high humidity (60–80%). Mount on bark or wood slabs to replicate its natural growth habit. Use a well-draining mix of orchid bark, sphagnum moss, coco coir, and perlite. Water when the medium feels dry but avoid soggy conditions. Maintain temperatures between 65–95°F, and mist regularly if grown indoors. Fertilize monthly with a diluted balanced fertilizer during active growth. Avoid direct afternoon sun, which can scorch the leaves. Watch for mealybugs and spider mites, especially in dry environments.
Ships in 5.5" pots. You will receive a plant similar to the ones pictured, though size and fullness may vary. Please understand that shipped plants have bumpy rides. A few broken leaves or small stems are normal during shipping and are not considered damage. Broken stems can be rooted once the cut end dries to start new growth. Plants may arrive semi‑dormant, and in winter they may naturally drop a few leaves. If your plant arrives rotting or dead, we will replace it. Please contact us with photo proof within 24 hours of delivery. After 24 hours, plant care becomes the buyer’s responsibility, though we’re always happy to answer questions and help you succeed. We also add brief instructions on getting started when you open your box. We want our plant babies to have happy new homes! 🥰
Heat packs are available to purchase in our shop for cold-sensitive plants. Keep in mind some plants we carry are very tropical and even cold, not freezing, temperatures can kill them. 📌IF YOU EXPECT COLD WEATHER, PLEASE PURCHASE A HEAT PACK! 📌 These are necessary for winter shipping, so I sell them at cost. I won't refund or replace any frozen plants unless you buy one!
