If you’re looking for a plant that completely defies the standard "vine" look, the Hoya imbricata is your winner. Known as a "shingling" plant, its leaves grow flat against a surface, overlapping each other like the scales of a dragon or shingles on a roof. In the wild, it forms a symbiotic relationship with ants, creating hollow "domatia" beneath its leaves—making it one of the most fascinating botanical curiosities in the Hoya world.
The Highlights
The Shingle Habit: Large, circular, mottled green leaves that are designed to press flat and "climb" a mount or trellis.
Intricate Patterns: Features a beautiful, "veiny" silver and purple-tinted mottling that becomes even more dramatic as the plant matures.
Unique Texture: The leaves are stiff and slightly curved, designed to "hug" whatever surface they are growing on.
Why It’s a Collector's Grail
A Living Sculpture: It doesn't just grow; it decorates. It creates a stunning vertical display that looks more like a piece of art than a typical houseplant.
The "Ant-Plant" Factor: Collectors love the lore behind this plant’s natural habitat. It’s a conversation starter for anyone who visits your shop or home.
Rare Expression: While many Hoyas look similar, the Imbricata is unmistakable. It’s a high-prestige addition for the Hoya fanatic who thinks they have everything.
Quick Care Guide
Light: Bright, indirect light is best. It needs good light to maintain its mottling, but keep it out of the harsh afternoon sun.
Water: Note! This Hoya loves moisture more than its succulent cousins. It prefers high humidity and should be misted or kept in a setup where the mount stays slightly damp, but the roots never sit in stagnant water.
Substrate: If not grown on a mount, it needs an extremely chunky, airy mix. However, it is happiest when allowed to climb a piece of cork, wood, or a moss pole.
Humidity: High Humidity is non-negotiable (70%+). Because it "hugs" its mount, it needs ambient moisture to prevent the leaves from drying out or failing to attach.

You can’t go wrong with these “starter plants!” This is my third box from Plant Nook and I’m always surprised how big the starters are. Everything is always so beautifully packaged and arrives so in tact and you can unwrap without damaging the plants!
