The Hoya 'Mathilde' Splash is the darling of the Hoya world. A lucky hybrid between Hoya serpens and Hoya carnosa, it takes the best of both parents: the adorable, small round leaves of the serpens and the hardy, easy-going nature of the carnosa. The "Splash" cultivar is specifically selected for its heavy silver freckling that looks like a starry night sky.
The Highlights
Silver Freckling: Every leaf is a canvas of "splash"—shimmering silver speckles that vary from leaf to leaf, creating a high-contrast, glittering effect.
Perfectly Round Foliage: Features small, coin-shaped leaves that are thick and succulent, giving the plant a very organized and tidy appearance.
Pot Size: Established and "mounding" in a 2-inch nursery pot.
Classic Fragrance: Produces clusters of fuzzy, white-to-pale-pink flowers that smell like a mix of sweet honey and gardenia.
Why It’s a Shop Favorite
The "Starter" Collector Plant: It looks like a rare, high-end collector's item but is actually incredibly resilient and easy to grow, making it perfect for anyone starting their Hoya journey.
Compact & Lush: It stays relatively small and bushy, making it the ideal choice for a "reading nook" shelf or a desk display where space is limited.
Stable Variegation: Unlike some splashy plants, the "Splash" on a Mathilde is very stable and will continue to put out beautiful, speckled leaves as it grows.
Quick Care Guide
Light: Bright, Indirect Light. Strong light is the key to maintaining that heavy silver splash. In lower light, new growth may come out mostly green.
Water: Let the soil dry out almost completely between waterings. Use the "taco test"—if the round leaves feel a bit flexible, it’s ready for a drink.
Substrate: Needs a very chunky, airy mix (bark, perlite, and charcoal) to keep the roots happy and dry.
Humidity: Very adaptable! It thrives in 50%+, but it is a champion for standard household humidity.

You can’t go wrong with these “starter plants!” This is my third box from Plant Nook and I’m always surprised how big the starters are. Everything is always so beautifully packaged and arrives so in tact and you can unwrap without damaging the plants!
