Product description

Lobelia cardinalis – Cardinal Flower

Lobelia cardinalis is a versatile aquatic and marginal plant native to North America, valued in aquascaping for its striking, broad leaves and rich coloration. Submersed growth features vibrant light- to medium-green foliage, while emersed leaves and new shoots often display deep purple to reddish hues, creating bold color contrast in freshwater layouts. It grows into compact, bushy clusters about 4–12 inches (10–30 cm) tall, making it ideal for midground or foreground groupings.

This plant thrives in medium to high lighting and benefits from CO₂ injection and regular fertilization for dense, vibrant growth and enhanced red or purple coloration. It adapts to a wide range of conditions (pH 6.0–7.5, temperature 68–82 °F 20–28 °C) and is easy to propagate by trimming and replanting cuttings, which encourages a full, carpet-like stand.

Hardy and visually striking, Lobelia cardinalis adds structure and color depth to aquascapes, while providing natural shelter for small fish and shrimp. It’s equally at home in submerged aquarium layouts or as an accent in paludariums and ripariums.
