Cryptocoryne pygmaea – Pygmy Crypt
Cryptocoryne pygmaea is a small, slow-growing rosette plant native to Southeast Asia (notably the Philippines). True to its name, this “pygmy crypt” stays compact—typically 3–6 inches (7–15 cm) tall—making it an excellent foreground or small midground accent in nano and nature-style aquariums. Its lance-shaped leaves range from soft green to olive-brown and may develop subtle reddish hues under stronger light.
Like most Crypts, C. pygmaea is hardy and undemanding. It thrives in low to medium lighting, prefers a nutrient-rich substrate, and grows steadily without requiring CO₂ injection (though CO₂ and stable fertilization will enhance color and density). It tolerates pH 6.0–7.5 and temperatures 72–82 °F (22–28 °C). As with other Cryptocoryne species, it may experience temporary “crypt melt” when first planted, but will regenerate with healthy new leaves once established.
Compact, attractive, and easy to care for, Cryptocoryne pygmaea is ideal for aquascapers seeking a low-maintenance, foreground rosette that adds subtle texture and natural shelter for shrimp and small fish.
