Hoya sp. aff. vitiensis NS05-021 is an intriguing field collection from Fiji
that shows characteristics similar to Hoya vitiensis, though it has not been
formally identified as such. The designation "aff." (meaning "affinity with")
indicates botanical resemblance while acknowledging that differences
exist—making this a compelling acquisition for collectors interested in
taxonomic nuance and rare genetics.
Flowers & Fragrance
The flowers are much larger than those from regular Hoya vitiensis, up to 2 12
cm. They are slightly fuzzy and a beautiful apricot color with a yellow and red
corona. Ours has not flowered yet so I included a picture of the flowers from
Vermont Hoyas website which is a great resource for Hoya information.
Foliage
The foliage displays traits that suggest a relationship to Hoya vitiensis—likely
featuring attractive veining and appealing leaf texture. Individual specimens
may vary, and subtle differences from true vitiensis are part of what makes this
collection botanically noteworthy. The leaves stay relatively small but the
flowers are quite large which is a welcome rarity in Hoyas.
Care Requirements
With Fijian origins, this Hoya thrives in warm, humid conditions that echo its
native island habitat. Provide bright indirect light, a chunky well-draining
substrate, and consistent moisture without waterlogging. Higher humidity
encourages robust growth and may help bring out the best foliage
characteristics.
Growth & Display
Growth patterns are still being documented, making each grower's observations
valuable. Display according to its developing habit—whether climbing, trailing,
or somewhere in between.
For the Collector
This Hoya appeals to those who appreciate the investigative side of
collecting—an opportunity to grow something genuinely rare while participating
in its ongoing story of discovery and classification.
