LECA clay balls create the drainage layer that keeps bioactive enclosures balanced. By allowing excess water to settle beneath the substrate, LECA prevents soggy soil while maintaining the humidity plants and microfauna love.
A simple but essential ingredient for building a thriving planted enclosure. LECA (Lightweight Expanded Clay Aggregate) is a natural clay substrate used to create a drainage layer in bioactive enclosures. Each clay pebble is kiln-fired at high temperatures, forming lightweight, porous balls that allow water to pass through while maintaining airflow.
In planted terrariums and vivariums, LECA is placed at the bottom of the enclosure beneath the substrate layer. Excess water collects between the clay balls rather than saturating the soil, helping prevent root rot and maintaining stable humidity levels.
LECA also creates pockets of airflow that support healthy root systems and beneficial microfauna in bioactive setups.
Great for: • Vivariums
• Terrariums
• Dart frog tanks
• Crested gecko enclosures
• Planted reptile habitats
Benefits • Creates a reliable drainage layer
• Prevents soil from becoming waterlogged
• Helps regulate humidity
• Supports healthy root growth
• Long-lasting and reusable
A bioactive staple for building healthy planted enclosures.
