bəˈrōk,bəˈräk
1. art : of, relating to, or having the characteristics of a style of artistic expression prevalent especially in the 17th century that is marked generally by use of complex forms, bold ornamentation, and the juxtaposition of contrasting elements often conveying a sense of drama, movement, and tension
2. : characterized by grotesqueness, extravagance, complexity, or flamboyance
3. of gems : irregularly shaped
Being a baroque flute performer, I naturally gravitate towards a baroque sensibility and it is in this style that I found my inspiration for this collection of necklaces, rings, and pendants. This collection focuses on finding beauty in the unconventional, irregular, and grotesque which I feel is what the baroque spirit is.
I have always been interested in finding beauty in the unconventional or bizarre. Most of this collection of jewelry reflects that which I feel is the essence of the baroque spirit. This labradorite and sterling silver ring from afar perhaps looks symmetrical and conventional. At quick glance the labradorite seems to be set in a possibly sun or flower shaped round setting. As you inspect it closer though, you'll notice that the edges of the ring appears frayed and jagged. I have made a series of random cuts on the edges of the setting that make the setting resemble tree branches or roots or even lightning. While they are organically created and unique to every piece, they also do not follow any sort of pattern or symmetry, yet from afar they seem like they do. It is this perception of symmetry and perfection from something that is very imperfect that I am attempting to convey from every piece in this collection.
Ring features:
* 19mm round cut natural faceted blue labradorite centerpiece gem
* Measures approximately 1.25" in diameter
* Size US 4.5
* Sterling silver setting
* 100% handmade
For crystal practitioners:
Labradorite is considered a tremendously spiritual stone, especially helpful for people who tend to overwork. It helps an individual regain energy while aiding the body and spirit in healing itself. Labradorite is also considered to be one of the most powerful protectors. The gemstone creates a shield for auras and protects against negativity of the world. Labradorite is said to temper the negativity within ourselves as well. Because of its changing colors, Labradorite is known as a stone of transformation, enhancing strength of will and inner worth.
