What exactly is a moissanite?
Even though all jewelry moissanite gems are lab-created, moissanite is actually a naturally occurring silicon carbide. It is extremely rare to find naturally formed moissanite but they do exist. They exist in extremely small quantities, however, therefore gem sized moissanite has to be created in a lab. Most people like to compare moissanites to diamonds but I personally don't like that comparison because moissanite in its own right is an actual mineral therefore any comparisons with another mineral just doesn't make sense. If you do want to compare it to a diamond, however, you'll find that although diamonds are still the hardest mineral in existence with a Mohs hardness of 10.0, moissanites come extremely close at 9.25. Moissanites, however, beat diamonds in refractive index. That is, moissanites will always out-sparkle diamonds. Furthermore, moissanites cost only a fraction of the cost of diamonds of the same size or quality. Also, if you are concerned about "blood diamonds" and the ethical aspects of diamond mining, moissanites should always be your choice because they are created in a laboratories.
