This species grows primarily during the warm, rainy summer months. It is particularly sensitive to cold and excess moisture, requiring a strictly dry, frost-free dormancy in winter to prevent rot and promote its characteristic large purple flowers.
Origin: Mexico. While historically considered a narrow endemic of the Rio Nazas valley and the Indé Municipality in Durango, recent taxonomic revisions (POWOISI) list its native range as extending into Coahuila and Nuevo León. It typically grows on volcanic rocky outcrops and grassy mountain tops at elevations between 1,300 and 1,700 meters.
