Pellionia pulchra — Species
(commonly called Watermelon Begonia)
From Southeast Asia, this trailing species comes from humid tropical forest where it grows as a low, spreading groundcover on consistently moist understory surfaces. It is grown for its narrow oval leaves marked with a watermelon-like pattern: a lighter green base crossed by darker emerald to brown-green venation, often paired with reddish stems that add more contrast. The growth stays fast, flexible, and creeping, so it works well spilling from a pot, covering soil, or rooting along terrarium hardscape. The name Watermelon Begonia is only a common name. It is not a true begonia, and like other members of its group it produces small, inconspicuous flowers rather than a showy bloom display. Kew currently treats Pellionia pulchra as a synonym of Procris repens, while the older name remains widely used in horticulture.
