The plant forms a small, upright shrub, typically around 10–12 inches tall in cultivation, with finely divided, twice-pinnate “fern leaf” foliage that ranges from deep green to bronze on top and rich red beneath. The narrow, feathered segments give it a delicate, skeletal look in contrast to its sturdy red stems, and in stable warm, humid conditions it produces small, soft pink flowers above the foliage.
