Alocasia Longiloba Albo Care
(Suitable for growers anywhere in the USA)
Alocasia longiloba Albo is a striking variegated elephant ear with elongated, silver-green leaves and white marbling. Its care is similar to other jewel Alocasias but with extra attention to maintaining healthy roots and preserving variegation.
☀️ Light
* Provide bright, indirect light.
* An east window or a few feet back from a south or west window works well.
* Avoid direct afternoon sun, which can burn the white sections.
* Too little light may result in smaller leaves and weaker variegation.
💧 Water
* Water when the top 1–2 inches of soil are dry.
* Keep soil lightly moist but never soggy.
* Alocasias prefer consistent moisture and dislike prolonged drought.
🌱 Soil
Use a chunky, airy mix:
* 40% potting soil or coco coir
* 30% orchid bark
* 20% perlite or pumice
* 10% worm castings or compost
Excellent drainage is essential to prevent root rot.
🌡️ Temperature
* Ideal range: 65–85°F
* Avoid temperatures below 60°F.
* Protect from cold drafts and sudden temperature swings.
💨 Humidity
* Prefers 60–80% humidity.
* Can adapt to average indoor humidity, but higher humidity encourages larger leaves and reduces crispy edges.
* Good airflow is just as important as humidity.
🌿 Fertilizer
During active growth:
* Feed every 2–4 weeks with a balanced fertilizer at ¼–½ strength.
* Reduce feeding during winter or periods of dormancy.
🪴 Repotting
* Repot every 1–2 years when roots fill the pot.
* Choose a pot only 1–2 inches larger than the root ball.
* Spring is the best time to repot.
Dormancy
If temperatures cool or light levels drop, the plant may slow down or lose leaves. This is normal.
* Reduce watering.
* Keep warm and bright.
* New growth usually resumes in spring.
Common Problems
SymptomLikely Cause
Yellow leavesOverwatering or natural aging
Brown edgesLow humidity or inconsistent watering
Drooping leavesDry soil, root stress, or cold temperatures
Mushy stemRoot rot from overly wet soil
Weak variegationInsufficient light
Outdoor Growing
* In USDA Zones 10–11, it can remain outside year-round.
* Elsewhere, place outdoors in bright shade once nighttime temperatures consistently stay above 65°F and bring indoors before fall temperatures drop below 60°F.
Pro Tip
Alocasia Longiloba Albo thrives in clear nursery pots and semi-hydro setups. Clear pots make it easier to monitor root health, and stable moisture helps maintain vigorous growth and strong variegation.
