Product description

Phormingochilus sp "Sabah Red" (Crimson Purple Tree Tiger Tarantula) The Sabah Red is one of the most sought after arboreals coming out of Borneo, and it earns that reputation with color alone. Deep red runs across all of the legs, set against a beige carapace and femurs that shift blue green depending on the light, sometimes even showing a touch of green on the carapace at the juvenile stage. This is a captive bred old world tarantula for sale that stands out even in a hobby full of colorful arboreals. Why do hobbyists keep Phormingochilus sp "Sabah Red"? Stunning Coloration: Deep red legs paired with a beige carapace and blue green femurs, a combination that gets more defined with every molt.< Heavy Webber: Builds a dense silk lined tube retreat pressed against cork bark or a hollow, and that silk work is a big part of the appeal for keepers who enjoy watching an enclosure fill in. Fast Grower: Grows at a solid pace for an old world arboreal, rewarding for keepers who like watching real progress between molts. Rare in the Hobby: Still one of the more limited species globally, with only a handful of keepers worldwide working with it consistently. How should Phormingochilus sp "Sabah Red" be kept? Adult Size: Reaches about 5 inches at full leg span, staying noticeably more compact than some of the larger arboreals in the same genus. Enclosure: As an arboreal tube dweller, provide an enclosure roughly 2 times the leg span as footprint and 3 times the leg span as height, with a vertical cork bark tube or hollow retreat as the centerpiece. At full adult size that works out to about 10 inches of floor space and 16 inches of height, with 1 to 2 inches of substrate for humidity buffering rather than deep burrowing. Scale everything down while it is still growing into that size. Temperature: 65-75°F. Humidity: 75-85%, with strong airflow so the enclosure never turns stagnant. A drier microclimate near the retreat opening lets the animal choose its comfort zone. Water: Provide a shallow water dish placed in an elevated position if possible. This is more natural for arboreal species and helps prevent crickets from falling in and drowning. Diet: Crickets, roaches, and similar feeders sized to about a quarter of the leg span, matching the width of the carapace (head). This species feeds readily and takes larger prey than many other arboreals. Feed at least once a week. Temperament: Fast and alert, this species would much rather retreat into its tube than stand out in the open, and it carries a medically significant bite typical of old world species. We do not encourage or recommend handling with any of our tarantulas, old world species especially. Set up a proper vertical retreat and this becomes a consistently visible, rewarding animal to watch. Are there any additional notes or considerations? Real Cork Bark Matters: A proper vertical cork bark tube or hollow from day one helps this species settle in and web faster than any other setup we've tested. Our dry goods selection has options sized right for this. Limited Global Availability: This species has only recently started breeding with any regularity. We can personally attest that even now, only a small number of keepers worldwide are working with it consistently. Captive Bred: All Tarantulas are 100% captive bred.
