Product description

Blaberus discoidalis — Discoid Roach One of the most practical and reliable feeder roaches available, Blaberus discoidalis is a large-bodied species prized by reptile and amphibian keepers for its impressive size, ease of care, and — critically — its Florida-legal status. Unlike Dubia roaches, Discoids are legal to keep and breed in Florida, making them the go-to feeder roach for keepers in the Sunshine State. 🏠 Housing A 5–10 gallon enclosure works well for a productive colony. Moderate to high ventilation is important — a well-screened lid or ventilated tub keeps conditions fresh and prevents moisture buildup. Discoids are adaptable: they can be kept in a bare-bottom enclosure with eggcrate hides in traditional feeder fashion, or given 1–2" of coconut fiber, sphagnum peat, or potting soil if you prefer a more naturalistic setup. They will burrow readily when substrate is available, but it isn't required for successful breeding. Provide vertical hides — cardboard tubes, eggcrate panels, bark slabs, or plywood roach huts work great. Adults in particular benefit from vertically slanted surfaces, and all life stages will use above-ground hides for shelter and molting. 🌡️ Temperature Optimal breeding and growth occurs between 75–85°F. Cooler temps will slow reproduction but won't harm the colony — just expect a longer development timeline. 💧 Humidity Discoids prefer things on the drier side and are not particularly humidity-sensitive. A 5050 humidity gradient — one half of the enclosure slightly moist, the other dry — is a solid baseline. Avoid consistently wet conditions. 🥗 Diet A staple diet of high-protein dry food (we use dry dog food kibble) combined with fresh fruits and vegetables covers all nutritional bases. Leaf litter can be offered as an enrichment food and is appreciated. Remove uneaten fresh food promptly to prevent mold. 🔄 Breeding & Life Cycle Adult lifespan: 1–2 years Nymph development: 4–8 months depending on temperature Gestation: 2–4 months under optimal conditions Litter size: ~20–30 nymphs per birth Females give live birth (ovoviviparous), making colony management straightforward. The colony is quite hardy and resilient against lapses in care. ✈️ Live Arrival Guarantee on all orders.
