"War Nickels"—were minted by the United States from 1942 to 1945. Because the military desperately needed nickel for armor plating and military equipment during World War II, Congress authorized the U.S. Mint to replace the traditional alloy with a mixture of 35% silver, 56% copper, and 9% manganese. These remain the only circulating nickels in American history to contain silver. It’s the first time in U.S. history that Philadelphia used a P for its mint mark.
