Syngonium ‘Godzilla’

Description & Rarity:

Syngonium ‘Godzilla’ is an unusual collector Syngonium prized for its heavily textured, curled, twisted foliage that gives the plant an almost prehistoric appearance. Unlike the smooth, flat leaves of typical arrowhead vines, ‘Godzilla’ develops puckered, contorted leaves with irregular edges and a dense, compact growth habit. Its bizarre foliage makes it a less commonly encountered and highly distinctive Syngonium cultivar.

Light:

Provide bright, indirect light for the strongest, most compact growth. Gentle morning sun is usually tolerated, but avoid intense afternoon sun, which can scorch the foliage. It will tolerate medium light but may grow more slowly.

Water:

Water when the top 1–2 inches of substrate have dried. Water thoroughly and allow excess water to drain completely. Keep slightly and consistently moist during active growth, but never leave the roots sitting in soggy soil.

Humidity:

Prefers 50–70%+ humidity. Higher humidity can encourage lush growth and help new leaves unfurl properly, but good airflow is important. Established plants generally adapt well to normal household humidity.

Temperature:

Ideal temperatures are 65–85°F (18–29°C). Protect from temperatures below approximately 55–60°F and from cold drafts or sudden temperature changes.

Soil:

Use a chunky, well-draining aroid mix containing ingredients such as orchid bark, perlite or pumice, coco coirchips, and quality potting mix. The substrate should retain some moisture while allowing plenty of oxygen around the roots.

Fertilizer:

Feed with a balanced fertilizer at ¼–½ strength every 2–4 weeks during active growth. Reduce feeding when growth slows.

Growth Habit:

‘Godzilla’ tends to remain bushy and compact when young, with its twisted leaves creating a dense, almost sculptural appearance. Like other Syngoniums, mature growth may eventually begin to climb or trail. Providing a moss pole or support can encourage larger mature growth.

Propagation:

Propagate easily from stem cuttings containing at least one viable node. Root cuttings in water, sphagnum moss, perlite, or another moist, airy propagation medium. Warm temperatures and increased humidity can speed rooting.

Special Care:

Because the naturally curled and distorted foliage creates small crevices, periodically inspect the undersides and folds of the leaves for pests, particularly spider mites and thrips. The unusual curling is a characteristic of ‘Godzilla’ and does not indicate that the plant is unhealthy.

Toxicity:

Contains calcium oxalate crystals and is toxic if ingested. Keep away from pets and small children.
