Description & Rarity:

Philodendron ‘Micans Mint’ is a rare collector form of the beloved velvet-leaf Micans, prized for combining its signature soft, velvety foliage with unusual minty green, silvery-green, cream, and pale mottled variegation. New leaves can display beautiful shifts in color as they harden, while the velvety surface creates an almost iridescent effect depending on the light. Mint-variegated Micans is considerably less common than standard Micans, and attractive, stable variegation makes it especially desirable among Philodendron collectors.

Light:

Provide bright, indirect light to encourage strong growth and maintain the mint coloration. Gentle morning sun is usually beneficial, but avoid harsh afternoon sunlight, which can scorch pale variegated areas. Too little light can result in smaller leaves, stretched growth, and less impressive coloration.

Water:

Water thoroughly when the top 1–2 inches of substrate have dried. Allow excess water to drain completely. Micans appreciates consistent moisture but should never remain soggy. Avoid allowing the substrate to stay completely dry for extended periods.

Humidity:

Prefers 60–80% humidity, although established plants can adapt to average household humidity. Higher humidity encourages larger, healthier foliage and smoother unfurling of new leaves. Maintain good airflow in very humid environments.

Temperature:

Ideal temperatures are 65–85°F (18–29°C). Protect from temperatures below approximately 55–60°F, cold drafts, and abrupt temperature changes.

Soil:

Use a chunky, airy, well-draining aroid mix. Orchid bark, perlite or pumice, coco chipscoir, and a small amount of quality potting mix make an excellent combination. Good drainage and oxygen around the roots are essential.

Fertilizer:

Feed with a balanced fertilizer at ¼–½ strength every 2–4 weeks during active growth. Reduce feeding when growth slows. Periodically flush the substrate to prevent excessive fertilizer-salt buildup.

Variegation:

Mint coloration can vary significantly between leaves and is not guaranteed on every new leaf. Bright indirect light helps support attractive coloration, but genetics ultimately determine the amount and pattern of variegation. Avoid removing healthy green tissue unnecessarily because the green portions provide the chlorophyll needed to fuel growth.

Growth Habit:

Micans is naturally a climbing or trailing Philodendron. It looks beautiful cascading from a hanging pot, but providing a moss pole or other climbing support generally encourages progressively larger leaves and a more mature appearance.

Propagation:

Propagate from stem cuttings containing at least one healthy node. Cuttings can be rooted in water, sphagnum moss, perlite, or another moist, airy propagation medium. For variegated plants, choose a section of stem displaying desirable coloration when possible.

Toxicity:

Contains calcium oxalate crystals and is toxic if ingested. Keep away from pets and small children.
