🌿 Hoya Finlaysonii “Chicken Farm” — Rare Splashy Wax Plant
Origin & Name Story
This striking Hoya was collected in 1997 in Sabah, Borneo by the botanist Eva-Karin Wiberg (EKW). It got its whimsical name “Chicken Farm” because the original wild specimen was found growing near a chicken coop — a quirky bit of botanical lore that gives this plant real character. Some growers believe it may be a natural hybrid involving Hoya finlaysonii and Hoya deykeae, due to its leaf form and coloration.
Plant Description
Leaves: Long, lanceolate leaves with deep green veins and dramatic silver splashes, giving a camouflage or “splattered” look.
Flowers: Small reflexed blooms (~5–6 mm) with yellow corollas tipped in redbrown and a white corona with a yellow center. Clusters (umbels) of 15–30 blooms may persist for 4–5 days.
Growth habit: A viningclimbing plant—ideal for trellises, moss poles, or baskets.
Care Tips
Light: Bright, indirect light. Avoid harsh midday sun that may scorch foliage.
Water: Let the potting medium mostly dry before watering again. Avoid waterlogging.
Soil: Use a well-draining mix (airy bark, perlite, orchid bark) to mimic its epiphytic roots.
Humidity & Temp: Prefers moderate-to-high humidity and warm temperatures.
Blooming: With proper light and care, rewarding clusters of flowers are possible.
Why You’ll Love It
This is a showpiece plant for collectors and enthusiasts alike, thanks to its bold foliage contrast and intriguing backstory. The “Chicken Farm” lore adds a touch of personality, making it more than just a plant — it’s a conversation piece.
