Scindapsus treubii ‘Moonlight’

Description & Rarity:

Scindapsus treubii ‘Moonlight’ is a stunning tropical aroid prized for its thick, elongated leaves covered in a metallic silvery-green sheen with a darker green central vein and margins. Its foliage has an almost satin or brushed-metal appearance. ‘Moonlight’ was once considered quite rare in cultivation but has become more available through specialty growers and tissue culture. It remains a highly desirable Scindapsus because of its distinctive foliage and elegant climbing growth.

Light:

Provide bright, indirect light for the best silver coloration and compact growth. Gentle morning sun is usually tolerated, but avoid harsh afternoon sunlight, which can scorch or bleach the foliage. It tolerates medium light but will generally grow more slowly.

Water:

Allow the top 1–2 inches of substrate to dry before watering thoroughly. Let excess water drain completely. Treubii Moonlight has thick leaves and prefers drying slightly between waterings. Constantly wet substrate can quickly lead to root rot.

Humidity:

Prefers 50–70%+ humidity, although established plants adapt well to normal household humidity. Higher humidity can encourage faster growth and larger foliage, especially when the plant is climbing.

Temperature:

Ideal temperatures are 65–85°F (18–29°C). Protect from cold drafts and prolonged temperatures below approximately 55–60°F.

Soil:

Use a chunky, airy, fast-draining aroid mix. A combination of orchid bark, perlite or pumice, coco chipscoir, and quality potting mix works well. Excellent root aeration is particularly important for this species.

Fertilizer:

Feed with a balanced fertilizer at ¼–½ strength every 2–4 weeks during active growth. Reduce feeding when growth slows. Avoid excessive fertilizer and periodically flush the substrate to prevent salt buildup.

Growth Habit:

Treubii Moonlight is naturally a shinglingclimbing vine. Juvenile plants may remain relatively compact, but providing a moss pole, plank, or other vertical support encourages larger leaves and more impressive mature growth. Without support, it can also be allowed to trail.

Growth Rate:

Generally a moderate to slow grower, especially compared with common Pothos. Warm temperatures, bright indirect light, consistent moisture, and a climbing support can significantly improve growth.

Propagation:

Propagate from stem cuttings containing at least one healthy node. Root in sphagnum moss, perlite, water, or another moist, airy propagation medium. Warm temperatures and increased humidity encourage faster rooting.

Special Care:

Avoid oversized pots and dense soil. Treubii Moonlight’s roots appreciate excellent airflow, and allowing the substrate to remain wet for too long is one of the easiest ways to lose the plant. Its thick foliage makes it somewhat more tolerant of occasionally drying out than being overwatered.

Toxicity:

Contains calcium oxalate crystals and is toxic if ingested. Keep away from pets and small children.
