Alocasia ‘Bisma Platinum’

Description & Rarity:

Alocasia ‘Bisma Platinum’ is a striking collector Alocasia prized for its thick, sculptural foliage and extraordinary metallic coloration. Leaves typically emerge in shades of silvery blue, platinum, gray-green, and muted sage with darker contrasting veins. The foliage can develop an almost metallic sheen under good lighting. ‘Bisma Platinum’ is less commonly available than standard Alocasia varieties and is sought after for its unusual cool-toned foliage and compact, architectural appearance.

Light:

Provide bright, indirect light. A small amount of gentle morning sun is beneficial, but avoid intense afternoon sunlight, which can bleach or scorch the foliage. Good lighting helps maintain compact growth and strong coloration.

Water:

Water thoroughly when the top 1–2 inches of substrate are mostly dry. Allow excess water to drain completely. Bisma prefers consistent moisture while actively growing but is highly susceptible to root and corm rot if kept continuously wet.

Humidity:

Prefers 60–80% humidity with good airflow. It can adapt to average household humidity once established, but higher humidity generally produces healthier foliage and reduces crispy edges.

Temperature:

Keep between 65–85°F (18–29°C). Warm, stable temperatures are best. Avoid temperatures below approximately 60°F, cold drafts, and sudden temperature fluctuations.

Soil:

Use a chunky, airy, fast-draining aroid mix. A combination of orchid bark, perlite or pumice, coco chipscoir, and a small amount of quality potting mix works well. Never allow the plant to sit in dense, waterlogged substrate.

Fertilizer:

Feed with a balanced fertilizer at ¼–½ strength every 2–4 weeks during active growth. Alocasias can be relatively heavy feeders when actively producing leaves. Reduce feeding considerably if growth slows.

Growth Habit:

Bisma Platinum has a relatively compact, upright growth habit with broad, substantial leaves held on sturdy petioles. Mature plants can become impressively full while remaining more manageable than many giant Alocasia species.

Corms & Propagation:

Propagation is primarily through corms and offsets produced around the mother plant. Corms can be sprouted in moist sphagnum, perlite, fluval, or another airy propagation medium. Keep warm and humid but never waterlogged.

Dormancy:

Growth may slow considerably during cooler temperatures or lower-light periods, and an Alocasia may occasionally drop older leaves. Reduce watering when growth slows and avoid assuming a leafless plant is dead—the underground corm can remain viable and regrow when conditions improve.

Toxicity:

Contains calcium oxalate crystals and is toxic if ingested. Keep away from pets and small children.
