Strelitzia nicolai, also known as the Giant White Bird of Paradise, is a large, dramatic houseplant with banana-like leaves that can grow to impressive heights indoors. It thrives in bright, indirect light and requires regular watering, allowing the soil to dry slightly between waterings. While it is a low-maintenance plant, it is toxic if ingested and can cause skin irritation.
Care and maintenance
Light: Prefers bright, indirect light, but can tolerate some direct sun. At least six hours of sun is ideal for growth.
Watering: Water thoroughly when the top of the soil feels dry, but do not let it sit in water. In summer, this may be twice a week, while in winter it can be once a week.
Humidity: As a tropical plant, it appreciates high humidity. You can increase humidity by misting, using a humidifier, or placing it in a bathroom or kitchen.
Soil: Use a well-draining potting mix, such as a cactus mix, and ensure the pot has drainage holes.
Fertilizing: Fertilize with a diluted all-purpose liquid fertilizer during the spring and summer months. Do not fertilize in the fall or winter.
Repotting: Repot every year or two when the plant becomes root-bound, or to refresh the soil. Choose a pot that is only 2-3 inches wider than the current one.
