Cleistocactus tupizensis is a striking columnar cactus from the high valleys of Bolivia. Its slender, upright green stems are densely covered in fine silvery to reddish spines that catch the light, and mature plants send up multiple columns for a dramatic clustered look. In summer it can produce tubular deep-red flowers that are a favorite of hummingbirds.It is an easy, undemanding grower that wants bright light and a dry root run. Give it full sun and water only when the soil has dried out, keeping it nearly dry through winter. It makes an excellent architectural accent in a pot or a warm, frost-free garden.
