Epipremnum aureum ‘Neon Pothos’ is a solid-color cultivar of the classic golden pothos, a climbing aroid native to the island of Mo’orea in French Polynesia. The species was first described in 1880 as Pothos aureus, then bounced through several genera — including Rhaphidophora aurea and Scindapsus aureus — before botanist George Sydney Bunting settled it into its current name, Epipremnum aureum, in 1964. Unlike the marbled, variegated patterning typical of the species, ‘Neon’ is prized for its uniform, almost fluorescent chartreuse foliage that holds its vivid color from emergence through maturity, without fading into the mottled green-and-yellow seen in other pothos types. As a vigorous, easy-care climber, it produces aerial roots along its stems and will climb readily on a moss pole or trellis, thriving in bright, indirect light that helps sustain its signature neon coloring. It’s also perfectly suited to a hanging basket, where its trailing vines cascade downward and the heart-shaped leaves fall in a lush, even curtain of bright chartreuse… one of the most striking, low-maintenance displays a hanging pothos can offer.
