I first encountered this plant years ago while going through Glasshouse Works massive website. I believe "Ken", the owner, was given the original start for this plant by someone that had collected it from a river somewhere in south east Asia. It was suggested that it might actually be of the genus calathea. I have yet to see any current scientific data on the subject. The main difference between the two is size and texture. The Maranta "repens", is of course smaller but, also has a smooth and shinier texture that the normal size variety. It also seems to be more tolerant of bog like conditions.
