Hoya pubicalyx (Albo, Splash) is a striking collector’s plant that combines two highly sought-after traits in one easy-growing Hoya: crisp white outer variegation and beautiful splash flecking across the leaf surface. This rooted cutting with new growth in a 2-inch pot is already on its way to becoming a vigorous vine, rewarding growers with fast growth, eye-catching foliage, and clusters of fragrant blooms. Whether displayed on a shelf or trained to climb, Hoya pubicalyx (Albo, Splash) brings year-round interest and a rare, high-contrast look to any indoor plant collection. Hoya pubicalyx (Albo, Splash) Care & Details Origin: Hoya pubicalyx is an accepted species native to Luzon in the Philippines, where it grows as a climbing plant in the wet tropical biome. The species was formally published by American botanist Elmer D. Merrill in 1918 in the Philippine Journal of Science, Section C, volume 13, page 331. Kew Science's Plants of the World Online recognizes the botanical name as Hoya pubicalyx Merr. The Albo, Splash plant offered here is an outer-variegated form with white variegation along the leaf edges as well as splash across the green portions of the leaves. Leaves: Features elongated, moderately thick, succulent leaves with creamy white outer variegation along the margins and splash markings scattered across the green center of the leaf. The thick, waxy foliage helps the plant store moisture and provides ornamental appeal even when not in bloom. Flowers: Produces clusters of star-shaped flowers with a fuzzy texture and shades of pink to deep reddish-purple. The blooms are often lightly fragrant, especially in the evening. Individual flower clusters can last for several days to a few weeks under favorable conditions. Growth Rate: Fast-growing compared to many Hoyas and can quickly produce long vines when given bright light and proper care. Watering: Water when the potting mix is mostly dry. Like most Hoyas, it prefers drying slightly between waterings rather than remaining constantly wet. Light: Prefers bright, indirect light. This plant has been thriving approximately 12 inches below a single Barrina T5 lights setup for 14 hours per day. Bright light helps maintain strong variegation and encourages blooming. Ideal Temperature & Humidity: Grows well around 85°F with approximately 72% humidity. It can adapt to typical indoor conditions but appreciates warm temperatures and elevated humidity. General Hoya Care: Use a well-draining potting mix, avoid overwatering, and provide bright indirect light for best growth and flowering. A standout collector’s plant that adds contrast and brightness to any Hoya collection.
