Alocasia cuprea ‘Pink Variegated’ is a rare variegated form of Alocasia cuprea, a jewel Alocasia species endemic to the rainforest slopes of Borneo, where its shallow roots take hold in pockets of soil among mineral-rich rock. The species was first described as Caladium cupreum in 1855 by Karl Heinrich Emil Koch and Carl David Bouché, before Koch reclassified it into its current genus as Alocasia cuprea in 1861; it first reached Europe in the 1850s when collector Thomas Lobb brought specimens back for Veitch Nurseries, making it one of the earliest jewel Alocasias known to cultivation. The species is prized for its thick, deeply ribbed, metallic copper-bronze leaves with a lacquered sheen and deep purple undersides. In this variegated form, that metallic surface is overlaid with sectors of pink, magenta, or blush coloring… worth noting this pink expression comes from anthocyanin pigment accumulation rather than a true absence of chlorophyll, making it a genetically distinct type of variegation from white or cream forms, and one that tends to hold its color more reliably over time. Each leaf develops its own unique pattern, contributing to the plant’s compact, architectural, low-growing habit.

TC plants are grown in a laboratory environment on nutrient-rich agar and have not yet been acclimated to greenhouse or household growing conditions. Upon receipt, buyers will be responsible for the acclimation process, including removal from the culture media and transition to appropriate humidity and growing conditions.
