Philodendron melanochrysum pink variegated is a rare cultivar of the classic velvet leaf species, Philodendron melanochrysum, native to the rainforests of Colombia. The straight species was formally described in 1873 by Jean Linden and Édouard André in the journal L'Illustration Horticole; the name "melanochrysum" means "black gold," a nod to the tiny golden flecks sometimes visible on the dark, mature leaves when they catch the light. First collected by André in Colombia and introduced to European cultivation under the synonym Philodendron andreanum, it was later offered by the London nursery Veitch & Sons, who called it one of the finest decorative Philodendrons ever brought into cultivation. The species is prized for the velvety texture of its leaves and their light veins, with foliage that shifts from a bronzy, reddish brown color as juveniles into a deep, near black green at maturity. The variegated form does not occur in the wild; it's a horticultural sport that emerged in cultivation, in which the color pulls in slowly as each leaf matures, and patterns are always unique, appearing in shades of orange, yellow, and light green alongside soft blush pink streaking. As the plant matures and is given a totem or support to climb, its already dramatic, elongated heart shaped leaves grow larger, with the variegation becoming even more pronounced and painterly.

TC plants are grown in a laboratory environment on nutrient-rich agar and have not yet been acclimated to greenhouse or household growing conditions. Upon receipt, buyers will be responsible for the acclimation process, including removal from the culture media and transition to appropriate humidity and growing conditions.
