Anthurium portillae ‘Indo Type’, also known as “Indo Port,” is a somewhat mysterious member of the aroid world, first introduced to the hobby through Indonesian nurseries and distinct from the original ‘OG Portillae’ lineage. That original lineage traces to a plant taken from the northern forests of Ecuador in the 1990s by collector Dewey Fisk, who likely brought back two related plants… one of which was later passed on to Enid Offolter of NSE Tropicals, giving rise to the “OG Portillae” line still grown today. To date, neither plant has ever been formally, scientifically described, and the Ecuadorian locality remains undocumented, leaving true portillae among the most enigmatic taxa in the genus. New leaves on this Indo-type form emerge in a rich maroon-brown, deepening dramatically to near-black as they harden before gradually settling into deep green, with a strikingly triangular leaf shape and bold, outward-flaring lobes that lend it an almost sculptural, wing-like presence as it matures. This plant was grown as a seedling in our South Florida nursery.
