parent picture included. Anthurium crystallinum variegated is a rare, form of the classic Anthurium crystallinum, an epiphytic aroid native to the rainforest margins of Panama and Colombia. The species was first formally described in 1873 by Belgian botanist Jean Jules Linden and French botanist Édouard André, based on a specimen collected by explorer Gustav Wallis in what was then called “Nueva Granada,” now believed to be Colombia; Linden went on to cultivate the plant in Brussels that same year. The straight species is prized for its heart-shaped, velvety foliage in dark green, set off by deep, crystalline white venation that gives the species its name. Instead of solid velvet green, this plant displays marbled sectors of pink, cream, or lighter green, caused by a natural chimeral mutation that reduces chlorophyll production in portions of the leaf. Because variegation in Anthurium crystallinum is unpredictable, each leaf emerges uniquely patterned. Rather than climbing, the plant grows in a clumping, rosette-like form, producing new leaves from its base as it matures.
